Klout - and the big bucks
They just raised $30M, that’ll fix a few things ;) A friend from a major research said the following, which I liked…There is no perfect measurement of influence yet and it’s probably best to follow two scenarios 1.  Use the information as based in a qualitative approach, so influence scores are less important OR  2.  Think about an measure of influence, which is tailored to the...

Klout is a game
and I wanted to play it. I have even tried to talk with their founder to work with them, to stretch their reach into Europe. Its a fun and potentially commercially interesting idea. Measure the influence of someone and sell that information to advertisers. To me, that is compelling and while with Attentio I regularly saw companies prepared to pay money to get their stuff to the hallowed...

GM Police not using online influence wisely...
I talk about online influence. Of course situation or timing is important. With recent riots in the UK, police twitter accounts are getting greater following. One example is the Greater Manchester Police @gmpolice with near enough 100,000 followers. But a lot of these “newly influential” need advice on what they should write, so they can wield this power properly. A classic example of...

Klout's big plan (musings)
Klout is building up critical mass meaning targeting millions of active profiles (people who log in and connect to sources). They are generating data about these people and classifying them as influential about topics and get others in network to vote. They are starting to work with advertisers to get perks to the people who are using the site. This creates word of mouth and more people join. NO...

Klout and Foursquare, I know why, now ;)
If you have Klout and you check in to a location, the tie up means that the retailer can offer a special deal to those with Klout over 40, 50, 60 and so forth. It is a partnership to give value to the Klout currency, but means absolutely nothing for the actual Klout score (IMHO). Thanks to @graphicdesignNY for putting that point across…

Klout and Foursquare, why?
Klout has now integrated Foursquare into their score. We can see no good reason for this. How often you check in, hardly gives you influence, even if you are a mayor, King or Lord of the manor. It’s not that Foursquare isn’t useful, we just don’t know how it infers authority. If one does lateral thinking you could argue that someone checking in to the White House, or Houses of...

How the online measurers, measure each other...
Both Peerindex and Klout have scoring systems with a maximum of 100. But how do they rate each other? (As an example of influence, Michael Arrington (Techcrunch founder) has a Klout score of 69 and a PI of 76) OK for fun, lets look how they measure each other. Klout gives Peerindex a score of 66, which is above average influence for their discussion areas. They say they are influential about...

WatchWatch
KLOUT CEO interviewed on ABC, very interesting… Key takeaways: 20 is a good score. 40-60 is very influential on certain topics (and above even more) More businesses using the score to connect to people, HP, Audi Engagement is very important! More posts, more reaching out, more consistent = higher score Employers are using it! Klout CEO Joe Fernandez had met an advertising executive...

The value and problems of Peerindex
Some in our network say they prefer Peerindex over Klout. We can see some sign that they will have more analytics than Klout and this may be a better view on people’s network and authority. They also explain that a PI over 40 means you are in top 10% and a score over 90 means you have an influence in top .1%, this is good!!! But Peerindex has to clean up some issues.  1. They are...

Adding +K in Klout
In Klout there is the ability to add a “vote” (a +K) to people that influence you. We believe if you have a decent Klout score and you give the +K then this will certainly strengthen the amount of Klout that person has on a topic and may even increase the overall Klout score.  In our opinion reaching out to a small group and reminding them that this +K exists and that they can give...

Talking a lot, improves your Klout (Belgian...
There are a few points to bear in mind here.  1. Getting a good Klout score does not necessarily mean that you have a ton of influence. It may be a guide though.  2. A good Klout score can be helped by activity. For example posting frequently and receiving a lot of @ replies or likes/comments in Facebook.  3. Clearly if you are tweeting or Facebooking to get a good Klout score only, then this...

Improving online influence - STEP 2
Clean up your “friend” list.  This may be controversial, but we believe it is fine to clean the list of people you follow (on twitter), and it is OK to do that quite regularly. It is likely the ratio of friend/follower is important for measures such as Klout, so removing those you follow can help your score. With Facebook this is not so important and frankly we believe the...

Look for the influential, forget the superstars
You are desperate to have that famous and influential blogger talk about your new widget. If she talks about it, the widget will be seen by 100,000 people (at least) and some people will buy it, just because of the blogger and share with others. “Come on, please try it, it’s great, it really will revolutionize that very important thing everyone does everyday”. But she isn’t...

Sites for social media influence and measurement
My exploration through social media and influence has smashed me up against the following services, each is quite useful to clean up and measure social media activity. Now what I am looking for is a service where I can measure Klout/Peerindex with city and interest ranking —- who has highest Klout in London for Olympic games etc.  Sites:  - Tweepi - allows you to search by Klout (in...

Tweeting links gets more followers
To increase your Klout score it is important to get more followers. More real followers should result in more retweets and this is another important measure in the Klout score. There is an interesting paradox perhaps? Social media scientist Dan Zarrella says that the best way to collect more followers is to tweet links, i.e. there is no correlation between @ conversations and higher follower...

Klout code of ethics
We’ll be looking for the code of ethics for Peer Index and other related companies, but for now the they are very easy to find for Klout. As they are in the middle of advertisers and the influential, they guide people who receive the products/services as follows:  - Klout will never sell or give away your contact info. - Participating (or not participating) will not change your Klout...

Klout and the normal curve
The normal curve. You know it. If all children sit an exam not everyone can have great grades, they have to be spread across the board, so sometimes grades are smoothed to make it fit the curve. A certain small percentage are brilliant and a certain small percentage are rubbish, the rest are in the milky middle.  This is the same for Klout. Not everyone can be influential or at least not...

Improving online influence - STEP 1
GO OFFLINE  Online influence is really mirroring what you do in real life. One obvious way to gain influence is to get known. The people we see in our immediate networks that are on the rise are often those at events and out there visiting customers or even picking up the phone and talking with people. These people share their cards, speak in front of audiences and people become their Facebook...

Influence algorithms
The make up of online influence algorithms will include standard response or engagement metrics such as 1. Retweets 2. Unique mentions as a ratio to #tweets 3. Followers who are influential 4. Following/Follower ratio etc.  These will give us a measure of who can pass messages around social media but will need to be built on to be a real measure of authority or influence. They will be relatively...

Online influence is more than activity
Mack Collier writes that Klout is measuring social media activity instead of influence. My understanding and experience of Klout is roughly the same. But there is overlap. If you are very active and sharing content that is relevant to your followers, you will build more followers. If you are writing crap and sharing nonsense you will lose followers. The Klout measure is based also on followers, RT...

Klout and "Online influence"
People have influence. Influence is the ability to change outcomes or make people make decisions that you want or do what you say. The birth of online social media has presented an opportunity for this influence to be measured and optimized. Of course influence is subjective and related to fields of expertise i.e. Lady Gaga has a lot of influence but you would be more influenced about how to get...
